Special Education Needs and Disabilities

At Mickley First School we are committed to ensuring that all  children are supported to enable them to make good progress in all areas of their development.  We believe our children make outstanding progress based on their outcomes over the last 3 years.

We believe that in order to effectively support children who may have additional needs it is vital to have early identification / assessment and high quality provision. This assessment process is outlined here. Our SEND Offer takes into account The Equality Act 2010, The Children & Families Act 2014 and The Special Educational Needs & Disability Regulations 2014.

Admission arrangements - The admission arrangements for all students are in accordance with national legislation, including the Equality Act 2010. This includes children with any level of SEND; those with Education, Health and Care Plans and those without. Please see our Admissions Policy. Transition between feeder schools always commence prior to the last week of Summer Term. For students with identified SEND, this transition may commence much sooner.

At times the school may deem it necessary to liaise with an external agency. We require your views / consent before referring any child and parents will be fully aware if their child is identified as being SEND.

We have successful a parent support group that meets every 6 weeks, which allows parents the time to discuss issues affecting them and their child.  This is part of our commitment to work with families.

Mr Hudson is our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) - if parents have any concerns about Special Educational Needs they are encouraged to contact him.

What is SEND

For children of compulsory school age, they have a special educational need/learning difficulty or disability if they:

  1. have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age; or
  2. have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools

A child under compulsory school age has special educational needs if they fall within the definitions above or would do if special educational provision was not made for them.

Children with special educational needs or disabilities may need extra help or support, or special provision made for them to allow them to have the same opportunities as others of the same age.  If a child or young person has special educational needs or disabilities their needs will fall into one or more of the following four areas:

1. Communication and interaction
2. Cognition and learning
3. Emotional, social and mental health 
4. Physical and sensory

Children will be supported in their education but they may need additional support through a Early Help Assessment Plan or and Education Health Care Plan.  Staff will advise parents about the way forward and in most cases the above is not necessary. Some children may laready have a statement, one of the major changes introduced by the Children and Families Act 2014 is the replacement of the current Statement system with new Education, Health and Care Plans (EHC Plan). EHC Plans will be extended to young people aged 25 to support young people into adulthood. School will work with parents and families to ensure the correct support is in place. Please note that we aim to engage all children alongside their peers who do not have SEND. We are fully inclusive and all children are treated equally.
