PSCHE
Personal, Social, Citizenship and Health Education (PSCHE)
Intent
Mickley First School ensures that all children receive a high quality PSCHE curriculum. We understand that this is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education and it is paramount that we provide children with the skills and knowledge that they need throughout their time at school and throughout their lives. Our 5 R’s promote responsibility, respect, resourcefulness, rights and resilience and our curriculum provides lots of opportunities for children to explore British Values and become prepared for later life.
Rationale
The National Curriculum (2014) states that schools should offer a curriculum which:
‘promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society’, and
‘prepares pupils at the school for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life’
It also states that schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice.
Implementation
At Mickley First School we use the programme of study produced by the PSHE Association to support our teaching. This follows 3 core themes (‘Health and Wellbeing’, ‘Relationships’ and ‘Living in the wider world’). We also use resources from Picture News which looks at current issues around the world and is closely linked to British Values. Our Picture News ambassadors regularly update our notice boards and the weekly question is used in assembly time to stimulate thought and discussion.
As well as weekly lessons, many aspects of PSCHE are covered through our everyday work and acts of collective worship. We have also have an active School Council and we attend the Pupil Voice Conference help by the Prudhoe Partnership. These events have focused on PSCHE issues but with a wider interest in the community impact. Our curriculum is supported further by taking part in anti-bullying week, Beep Beep Road Safety Days, Internet Safety Day and inviting visitors from the police, fire service, ambulance service to our Community weeks in school. This year, all children in school received certified first aid training.
