MICKLEY First School’s efforts to get children to find green ways of getting to school have won a regional award.

The school was awarded the Modeshift STARS School of the Region for the North-East for promoting healthy, sustainable travel to school.

The school has helped children to understand the benefits of walking, cycling, and scooting to school both on their health and the environment.

Headteacher at Mickley First School Andy Hudson said: “We are delighted to have won the award for our commitment to supporting our pupils to use healthier alternative ways to travel to school.

“We work closely with both parents and pupils to encourage our students to be more active, which not only benefits our pupils, but also our environment.”

Mickley First School will now go forward to the national awards, which are due to be held next month at the Houses of Parliament.
