SCHOOLCHILDREN in Mickley have proved they have the golden touch after receiving a top award.

Mickley First School has achieved gold Modeshift Stars accreditation after displaying its commitment to sustainable travel.

In September the school became the first in Northumberland to earn a Modeshift star silver award.

Modeshift Stars is a national awards scheme established to recognise schools which demonstrate excellence in enabling sustainable and active travel.

Mickley First School works with the county council’s Go Smarter team to encourage pupils to walk, cycle and scoot to school whenever possible.

The gold accreditation came after the school organised more than 30 different initiatives to encourage sustainable travel.

To celebrate the award, staff and pupils came to school wearing wacky and wonderful hats and were treated to a walk down their very own red carpet.

David-Elliot Cooper, from theatre company Histronics, entertained the pupils and staff with Victorian keep fit in the school yard, followed by an assembly which showcased walking through the ages.

Mickley First School teacher and Go Smarter travel champion Lynsey Briddock said: “The Histronics event was enjoyed by all pupils, staff and parents.

“The meet and greet provided an energetic start to the morning and the range of head wear on display added extra excitement.”
